| The Proposal
If I asked you to marry me
And you turned me down
Then I know your reply would bring
My hope to the ground
And so I have devised
The means for your reply
If the answer is no
Then just listen to my song
If the answer is yes,
Then please sing along
La La La La - La La - La
La La
La La La La - La La - La La La
Well you know that I've always
been
Much better with songs
And I guess this is easier
Than saying it wrong
You don't have to say much
But please won't you sing on the "La's"
But if the answer is no
Then just listen to my song
If the answer is yes,
Then please sing along
La La La La - La La - La
La La
La La La La - La La - La La La
If you feel now like singing
Then I have proposed
But it's only a silly song
If the answer is no
But if you don't sing I'll bet
It just means not quite yet
If the answer is no
Then just listen to my song
If the answer is yes,
Then please sing along
La La La La - La La - La
La La
La La La La - La La - La La La
NOTES:
This was recorded at Apple-wood
Studio in West Seattle. I am playing guitar and
singing the lead vocal. I believe that my brother
Steve and Greg (the drummer for Scarlet, [Terry Miller's
group]) are sing back-up vocals.
I wrote this as a joke, but also
there was a part of me that was serious about it.
I felt that I had to marry Rita Graves, even if I
tricked her into it. When Rita heard the song she shook her head and smiled.
Later, this song was on a tape that I had given to Adoria
Kanistanaux (a girl that I had a crush on and had asked
her to do back-up vocals) to
get acquainted with some of my songs. She was a
very sweet girl (although about five years younger than
I was). After listening to the tape she asked me to sing this song. I did,
and she sang along doing the harmony. I said
"That's a dangerous song to sing harmony on" (although I
didn't believe she was doing anything more than singing
the song, she told me later
that she needed to "stay single" for now). We
never discussed it further.
