Esther Michaels, I heard you on
the radio last night
And with the lights out, I laid awake with dreams that
you were mine
Esther Michaels, Tonight before you go
I've got to let you know, I love you
Esther Michaels, I hear you on
the all-night radio
And every night, well I talk right back but you don't
even know
Esther Michaels, Tell me that you will
This love I can't conceal, I love you
Well I can't wait to gaze into
your eyes
You must look great because you sound so nice
I love to call you on your request line
I'll keep calling till you're mine
Esther Michaels, I know that we
could make a lovely pair
When your announcing, well I could sit and be the
listener
Esther Michaels, Please don't let me wait
Or tell me it's too late, I love you
RSO records showed some interest
in this song around 1979 with my first recording of it.
This was the second time I recorded this song it was
recorded at the Music Source in Seattle. I play piano on
this song. I had a great producer (I forget his
name) playing guitar and a backwards cymbal, Bruce from
the group "Owl" was on bass. Russell Bennett was
on cello, I hired a couple of studio musicians (a french
horn player and a drummer) and I am doing all the
vocals. NOTES:
I had gone back to the Green River
College radio station (after being away for a couple of
years) to see if I could put together an "air-check"
(that's a demonstration tape that DJ's use when applying
for work at a radio station). On my way in, the first
day, I heard a girl DJ that I thought had a great female
voice. Her name was Esther Schmikel, but on air
she was Esther Michaels. So I wrote this song
about a guy that falls in love with this voice on the
radio.
This was shortly
before I met Susan. After we were married for a
couple of years I had a job working overnights at a
radio station in Lewiston Idaho (while I tried to finish
up 2 more years of college) One night I was sick but
there was no one to cover so I went in to work with a
bucket. It was awful. I told the Program Director
that I would never do that again. The next time
that I was sick I would call him, or if he wanted a
fill-in overnight person Susan (my wife) was interested.
He thought that was a good solution to the problem.
There was already a Susan (Susie
Hanson) working for the station though, so he said Susan
would have to use a different name. We gave our
two small children the choice of a few different names.
They chose Daddy's song "Ester Michaels". So Susan
was Esther Michaels at KATW, KASY, KIXI and KVI (for a
real short time) then changed to
Susan Michaels at KVI, Star 101.5, KOL and KOMO.
